Finding Light in the Darkness

YANA is privileged to have so many dedicated supporters who each bring with them their own unique set of skills and experiences. We are delighted to showcase a new book ‘Finding Light in the Darkness’ written by Kate Morfoot.

We think this is a great resource for anyone living through the experience of grief and we hope you agree too.

An interview with Kate Morfoot

Author of Finding Light in the Darkness, Kate Morfoot from Dereham, Norfolk talks to us about why writing this book was important.

A dedicated supporter with an interest in writing

YANA is a charity Kate holds dear and has been a dedicated supporter since its inception.

After playing a key role in managing press and PR for the successful Wheatsheaf Ball at the Royal Norfolk Showground in 2009, Kate has continued to volunteer at various events, and completed the Mental Health First Aid course.

As Managing Director of Jungle PR Ltd, Kate has always had a strong interest in writing. She recently launched her debut book, ‘Finding Light in the Darkness’, a guidebook that addresses the challenging journey of grief.

The book is divided into six insightful sections, covering topics such as loss, the initial shock, stages of grief, coping strategies, healing, moving forward, and seeking support.

Wet weather, bereavement, and a desire to help

Kate tells us that “last autumn, when the weather was so wet it was nearly impossible to go outside, I decided it was the perfect time to finally write the guidebook.

I had been thinking about for a while. Having experienced bereavement myself, I felt that sharing my insights on how to recognise and face grief head-on might, and hopefully will, help others.”

Hope is a key ingredient in life

“Grief, in whatever form it takes, is deeply personal. Writing ‘Finding Light in the Darkness’ has been an incredibly personal journey for me.”

Kate goes on to explain that “my aim was to create a self-help resource that offers comfort and guidance to those struggling with the complexities of grief. I want others to know that they are not alone and that there is a path to healing, even when it seems impossible.

Whether you’re coping with the loss of a loved one, a significant life change, or any other profound loss, this book is meant to be a companion in your grief recovery. I hope it brings some relief and comfort to those who need it.”

Valuable training helps save lives

We asked Kate how the Mental Health First Aid training funded by YANA has helped in life. She told us that “taking this course has been incredibly valuable, and I highly recommend it.

It’s extremely helpful in both personal and workplace settings, especially in identifying when someone might need support.

I applied what I learned last Christmas, recognising an emergency situation on a bridge along the A47, which thankfully had a safe outcome.”

If there was one thing you could tell people experiencing grief, what would it be?

Take each day as it comes.
