I’m struggling with grief

We’re here to help you find the support you need.

You are not alone. Whatever you’re feeling, it’s important to talk about it. Easier said than done? Yes. Many of us feel uncomfortable talking about death – whether bereaved ourselves or trying to support someone who’s lost a loved one. But death affects us all.

Grief takes many forms

We feel grief in many ways including sadness, anger, guilt, shock, or disbelief. Grief can affect our physical health, cause sleep disturbances, appetite changes or fatigue.

Talking with someone about how you’re feeling, or talking about the person who’s died, can help.

How to cope with grief

  • Allow yourself to grieve – to feel the emotions associated with your loss.
  • Seek support – connect with friends, family, or support groups to share your feelings.
  • Care for yourself – focus on your physical health by eating a balanced diet, exercising, and getting enough sleep.
  • Express your emotions -through talking or writing.
  • Establish a daily routine – for structure and stability during difficult times.
  • Seek professional help – from a therapist or counsellor if you’re struggling to cope. YANA can facilitate counselling for you if that’s appropriate.
  • Honour your loved one – use ways to remember and celebrate the life of the person you’ve lost.
  • Allow yourself joy – give yourself permission to feel moments of happiness and joy amidst your grief.
  • Engage in activities – do what you enjoy or brings you comfort.
  • Be patient with yourself – understand that grief is a process. It’s OK to take things one day at a time.

It’s OK to feel what you’re feeling. You’re not alone in this.
